Reflections..

一眨眼, i’ve been back in Singapore for over 2 weeks. My past 3+ months in the States really do feel like a dream. An unforgettable and memorable one. I’m truly am grateful for having such an opportunity. Coming home and reflecting on my trip there, I’ve been asking myself what have I taken out from my stay there. Have I growth to be a better person, more mature and independent? I guess I would never really know the answer as only time would tell.

But being immerse in a very different lifestyle and environment, I got a chance to know more about myself, be exposed to a very different education system and come to know about the things I like and dislike about Singapore.

~~

Being a 3 months exchange students without a need to worry about grades, I was able to go all out to explore Seattle, even though at times I was alone. Not say I wasn’t worried about my safety, but I learned to be alert and be aware of my surroundings. My attitude was that since I’m already here, I should make full use of my time and I realized I do really like exploring and discovering new things and places everyday! Now I’m armed with the skills to plan my own oversea trips :)

I also came to know that personal space is very important to me. That I must have a small little space I can go to at the end of the day to be alone. Something which I didn’t know means so much to me.

I also came to learn not to be too stress out when it comes to planning because most of the time, nothing would go according to plan. Something which I experience a lot during the last 4 months, but have learned to cope with. So just relax and play by ear :)

Through the wide range of subject I studied in UW (from geography which led me to appreciate the beauty around me, to sociology which gave me an understanding of issues pertaining to education, globalization and conflict; from architecture history which led me to understand why certain buildings are built as such and the history behind it, to learning more about construction materials), I came to be interested in stuff like the US history and many other topics. Guess I have a wide range of different books to read for now! :D

~~

The education system for both Singapore and America is very different. I cannot say that my view represent the whole of US since I was only in Seattle. But based on my study in Seattle, I could say that both systems have their pros and cons and if only they could be combined.

In UW, I got to experience how vocal Americans are in class. Hands would just rise in the middle of lectures, and questions and views would just be voiced out. In class, only a notebook and pen is needed, no sight of any lecture notes or pencil box. Study sessions are organized at night by the UW for most foundation classes. (Something I did not expect to find in a university.) Field trips are organized to let students come in contact with what they have learned in class. But what was disappointing was the structure of the exams as they are really just 死背. Singapore has always been criticized about route learning but I guess we are actually not as bad as we thought, especially when it comes to exam. At least we have to try and apply what we have learned to the questions. So if only how classes are conducted in UW can be combined with the exam style of Singapore, I guess it would provide a very good learning experience for the student.

Another thing that surprises me was that a lot of people are interested in graduate studies back in the States. It is quite common to hear people mentioning that they would be entering graduate school after they graduate from college.

~~

On my way back to Singapore, from Narita Airport, the plane was filled with Singaporeans and I heard the familiar Singapore accent. And I have to admit it actually felt weird and doesn’t sound nice. I came to realize how foreigners must have felt to hear Singlish. I guess being away made me more conscious of it and the importance of speaking good English. But I can say trying to speak proper English for the last few months is not an easy thing to do but it would be good to keep it up. :)

Leaving Seattle means leaving behind good customer service (and the tips!) and meeting friendly people that would strike up random conversation with you. Even so, to befriend Americans, I realize Asians must generally always take the initiative to go up to them and get to know them.

To foreigners, Singapore is just a country that bans chewing gum. To tell them more about Singapore is a manageable feat, but I learn that it becomes a dilemma when explaining about politics in Singapore. I will always remember the question Cynthea’s professor asked her: why Singapore is ranked no. 1 in anti-corruption, but yet ranked one of the last few for human rights.

But nevertheless, home is always the best no matter what. Especially the food. :p

~~

My experience in Seattle had definitely made 2008 an eventful one for me. I’m truly glad I created this blog to record down my experiences, even though I had to discipline myself to really sit down and blog. :p It would definitely be enjoyable to read through it in a few years time!

For now, I know I want to keep up my Seattle spirit of exploring even though I’m back in small Singapore and not in a vast piece of land surrounded by mountains. No matter how small Singapore is, there are definitely places to explore! Looking forward to my next venture into a completely foreign country!

Welcome 2009! Happy New Year to everyone!

Today i realise the importance of making more friends and getting to know more people. How do you go up to someone and make friends with them? I don't like the idea of making friends with people just to ask favours from them. But i guess i would have to change my mindset. I need to master the art of striking up conversation with random people and maintaining a freindly relationship with them. It would be tiring (esp for an introvert like me) but i have to try else i would be at the losing end. Disappointed in myself again.. guess i can't help but like my comfort zone..

now i understand how ppl from other fac feel like when they come to SDE to take our modules.. but at least it is not so bad cos NUS is considered small.. if i ever see any foreigners i would hope that by then i would have the courage to go up to them and say hi.. make an effort to get to know them and welcome them to our small fac..

~

this blog seems to be getting more depressing.. all sad thoughts here..

Wednesday, October 1, 2008

i'm disappointed in myself.. i did not step out of my comfort zone and i did not take the initiative to mix around.. but instead went to join the asian group of ppl to do my construction project.. even though these ppl are considered american cos they live here for quite some time.. but nevertheless they are still Asians!! :(

In a dilemma..

I dunno what i want..hmm.. shall write down what i'm thinking to properly look into it.. hmph..

Temporary Housing
- Heard is 10-20 ppl sharing a big room (like a attic) and maybe a toilet?
- Common TV lounge area and dining area (have seen them)
- No privacy
- Dependable on room mates.. whether they party the whole night etc.
- I might stay here for 3 mths!
- Wld be easier to mix around and interact.. make friends with fellow roommates in the same situation as me
- Security? Unsure..
- Convenient of being on campus
- Moving to perm hsing might take some time and even then i might still be sharing a small small room with 2-3 ppl..

Getting an apartment
- Privacy and own space
- Hard to find as most of them require 1 year lease.. some of them may even be unfurnished
- I wld need to find one asap (like by mon) so that i can cancel my housing application.. else i have to pay cancellation fee.. like abt $400 plus..
- Might not be able to mix around with others depending on place..
- Might take some time to commute to school as might not be near school

Hmm.. so do i want privacy or convenient? it's only 3 mths not as if 1 year.. i can survive 3 mths in temp.. just have to step out of my comfort zone.. it wld be an experience.. but i still like privacy.. haiz..

shld i just accept temp housing and don;t think abt finding any other hsing.. and start enjoying seattle?
shld i try temp hsing for 1 day.. and if i dun like it i cancel my hsing application and move in with this jap couple? but their hse is quite far away and i wld have to make small talk to them throughout the day.. and i want to be independent.. like really stay alone and survive for 3 mths..

30 more days!

30 more days!! before i experience a lot of FIRST!

FIRST time sitting plane alone (lucky only for the return trip to S'pore in Dec)
FIRST time travelling in a foreign country w/o family or friends.. (even though i do get to travel quite often but it is always with my family!! so hee.. never really care abt little details.. all leave to my parents to settle.. now need to open my eyes big big!)
FIRST time staying by myself and having to look after myself (hope i dun get homesick)
FIRST time studying at an american uni, gg for roadtrips, staying at seattle.....

and the list can go on... lol..

wld be leaving s'pore on 30th aug.. flight at 6am (yar i noe super early-so i dun expect ppl to be there to send me off? cos wld be very inconvenient) wld be travelling the east coast of US and some parts of canada with my parents for 9 days (have joined tour so that they can help me carry my luggages around.. :p but think the tour gp wld be ppl from diff nationality cos we wld only be meeting the whole gp at NY) most prob meeting Kenny at philly or NY at night on one of the days there to chit chat..to be confirmed as the date draws nearer but if ur want to pass anything to him can go through me :) (but pls dun be too big stuff hor..)

wld be reaching seattle on 8th sept.. by then i wld have internet connection and can msn ur! hee.. wld first be staying at a motel with my parents till 12th sept (where i wld officially be alone in a foreign country) between 8th-12th sept wld be touring seattle with them + attending the international student orientation + settling all the admin stuff

after 12th sept? no idea.. lol.. most prob moving to the temporary hostel at the uni and waiting for my permanant housing (if i can get one..else i wld have to go house hunting alone.. blah).. but in the meantime shld be attending some more orientation program or travelling to neighbouring states (if can meet other exchange students) school only starts on 24th Sept (which falls within the one week break for nus students? lol.. nus students half the sem gone already then i start school..)

haha.. school is straight for 12 weeks with no breaks in between (unless u count thanksgiving holiday) and a straight 4 days of exams (all UW exams falls within 4 days.. and the date and time of ur exam depends on the date and time of the first lecture of that module.. so confirm no clashes and i can only say siao.. cos all exams clear within 4 days..)

my last paper falls on 12th dec and then i be flying back to s'pore on 13th dec morning.. so shld be back in singapore on 15th dec (if u count all the time difference and stopover)

tada.. summary of my trip and stay in seattle :D
wld be creating another blog specially dedicated to my stay there.. so ur can get updates there.. (when i'm creating it? not sure yet..haha it will appear on my msn nick when it is done!)

countdown begins! and i must faster go for lotsa kbox sessions else i won't be able to go for one for 4mths!! boohoo~

The Drina Series

whee~ feeling happy today! :D finally found something i wanted for very long...

went to Bras Basah to find my textbooks but just got no luck at the 2nd hand bookstore.. in the end went to Clementi Bookstore and finally NUS Coop.. Finally at Coop then manage to place an order for one book.. hope they would be able to place an order for the other book! anw.. this is not the main topic of this entry.. :p

haha... i finally manage to find my storybooks after so many years!! Drina! hee.. even though only manage to find 3 books.. but at least there is 3!!

hmm.. with the one book that i already have.. i still need to find 7 more books!! oh man.. haaha

anyone find these books familiar?? haha they are out of print already.. but most commonly found in primary and secondary school libraries.. have read them countless times and i'm still not bored of it! still remember in sec 4.. before i graduated.. i went to borrow every single book to read cos i noe it wld be very hard for me to get my hands on them again.. who cares if it is written for ages 9-12 :p:p:p luv it!!

The Drina series, a collection of books first published in England in 1957, expresses all the wistfulness and determination of a devoted balletomane as she struggles for her place at the barre and in the world of dance. From her earliest years, orphan Drina has loved movement and dance, but her grandmother-guardian has always discouraged her. When Drina enters a new school, and meets a girl named Jenny, her yearnings are more intense than ever. Jenny, who dislikes ballet, studies at the Selswick School, and only by lobbying hard does Drina, too, start lessons. By the time the story ends, readers learn the source of Drina's grandmother's hesitation, melodramatic and satisfying for all its incredibility. Drina's old-fashioned willfulness and her desire to dance will be joyfully embraced by ballet fans.

There are 11 books in total:
1. Ballet for Drina
2. Drina's Dancing Year
3. Drina Dances Alone / Drina Dances in Exile
4. Drina Dances on Stage / Drina Dances in Italy
5. Drina Dances Again
6. Drina Dances in New York
7. Drina Dances in Paris
8. Drina Dances in Madeira
9. Drina Dances in Switzerland
10. Drina Goes on Tour
11. Drina Ballerina

still remember when i was young i came across stacks and stacks of these books in bookstores.. but my mom dun want to buy for me and my sis.. wonder what happen to all these stacks of books.. hmm.. anyone so happen to have these books at home?? in some forgotten corner of the house?? hee want to consider selling to me?? :p:p:p

hope i can find the other 7 books sooooonnnn... :D

Am glad the internship is finally over! not a very beneficial 9 weeks.. but at least i noe more abt mosquitoes and a little of how things are done in a Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council..

the last week of internship was spent writing PTS report (can be considered completed bah.. just have to run through it again to ensure the tone of the report is neutral.. that's a little hard..), helping the finance dept with some admin stuff and watching shows again.. :p

tons of shows were watched within 6 weeks.. let's see.. (for my own reference)

Movies:
- The Monster House
- Bee Movie
- Balls of Fury
- The Spiderwick Chronicles
- The Other Boleyn Girl
- The Pursuit of Happiness
- Horton Hears a Who!
- Fantasic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer
- Kung Fu Dunk

Korean Dramas:
- 署童谣
- 豪杰春香
- Surgeon Bong Dal Hee
- Billy Jean, My Love
- Let's Go To The Beach

Others:
- American Next Top Model Season 9
- One Episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

hee.. opps.. the list is quite long.. don't think i would ever be able to complete such a feat ever again..

on the last day, we bought sugar roll from Polar for everyone in the office.. even though we never even talk to more half of them before.. cos cannot only give the ppl at the finance dept (who are the ones who really treated us really good and acknowledge our existence).. wld be quite wierd to give them but not to our supervisor..

those in the office (except one person) just thank us and wish us all the best for our studies.. quite awkward cos they also dunno what to say to us and vice versa..
but our in-charge.. upon seeing the sugar roll ask us whether issit we want to make him fat.. -_-'' and when he see us gg around the office giving out the cake.. he said 'wow so fast.. now giving out wedding cake already ar..' the 3 of us could only roll our eyes lar.. lame.. lucky i'm not seeing him again and pity my fellow intern friend who receive his call yesterday.. *irritating*

anws.. glad to have Pei Yun and Xiu Ming around for the 9 weeks :D to watch dramas together, to laugh abt things together.. now we have tons of jokes that only the 3 of us understand.. haha..
also thxful to the finance dept staff :D at least they acknowledge our presence and talk to us.. hee.. it's also because of them that we got some work to do during the last few weeks of internship *not complaining!*

hope next year internship would be more fruitful and enjoyable :D

~off to enjoy my holiday!~

First day at new workplace...

Went to the new workplace early today.. step into the reception area and was greeted by a lady (which i see very often previously at the old office when i so happen to go into the office) and she ask me 'May i help you?' Faints.. -_-''' lucky got this lady that recognises me and told her i'm the NUS intern.. diao.. and i was brought to the conference room (and was freezed to death.. one conference room that is not very big have 4 air-cons that is on full blast at 18oC.. brrr... and the staff there can still say very hot..)

anw.. after a while this guy who we see very often too (as he use to come to the old conference room to have his lunch) came into the conference room to get some stuff and he ask me who am i.. -_-'''''' i just stare at him and say 'interns from NUS?' and he 'ohoh.. sorry dun recognise ur..'

dunno what to say abt these 2 incidents.. but now i know the 3 of us are just invisible... and wasting resources..

Goodbye conference room!

Goodbye to the conference room! Our workplace for the last four weeks.. the place where we played silly games, watch movies and dramas, read books and sleep.. and not forgetting that due to it being a conference room, we can get KICKED out of it when there is meetings.. heheh..

haha.. feel the room so empty after so many weeks of being with boxes that have been placed in the room due to the packing of the office and the stuff in the conference room itself...
*do u spot my dvd player and my fellow interns lappie.. hee.. viewing of korean dramas in progress.. :p*

From mon onwards, we would be reporting to the new office near rivervale cres.. dread it.. cos it means i have to wake up even earlier to be able to reach there by 8 cos need to change to LRT somemore.. (sian have to change train 2 times..) wonder where wld we be 'parked' at the new office.. wld be given our own tables? or be left to do our own things in the conference room? hmm..

but hor i realised todae that no one bothered to tell us where the new office is located.. if not for having asked this lady on our 2nd week of internship abt the new office, we wld be left to figure out ourself where is the new office.. they very power hor..

to end of.. for those who yet to know.. its confirm.. i'll be gg to Seattle for my exchange :D will be travelling first before school start.. so will be leaving s'pore on the 30th aug :)

*but headache.. so many things to settle.. urgent now is my module registration and visa..not forgetting housing.. stress* hee.. now kind of glad it is so slack at work.. then i can do my exchange stuff.. but too bad work there no internet else can get more things done.. :p

we are the Untouchables..

its lunch time and i'm at Mos Burger blogging.. lol.. yar.. brought lappie to work (2nd day already)

accomplishment for today till lunch.. finish watching 'Pursuit of Happiness' and read a couple of pages of my storybook.. nothing else.. lol what a day.. 3 more hours of doing nothing till end of work! gambette!

haha.. yesterday one of the staff at the office mentioned to us that 'we are the untouchables..' -_-''' no wonder we are not given anything to do lar.. the people at the office feel that they cannot give us any work to do or help them with stuff.. but luckily.. one of the staff ask us to help them go through some files yesterday upon seeing us not doing anything..lol nevertheless,i still manage to watch finish balls of fury.. haha.. paid to watch movies ar.. hee..

and we invented another game.. chinese scrabble! haha.. guess by the time we finish this internship, we will have a stack of papers of the various games that we played..

commencement of Week 2..

seems like i would be posting the same thing over and over again for the next few weeks to come.. maybe i shld stop after this post.. but then.. 没地方诉诉苦了.. anw..

when to work today at 8a.m. cos wld be reporting to Sengkang Town Council from today onwards.. waited at the conference room for 1 hour before going to find the property manager in charge of our project to see if he has anything for us to do.. but.. he just ask us how we think we shld go abt doing the project.. and ask us to park ourself at the conference room and think abt it.. -_-'' walau.. they dun even have an idea of what they want us to do lar.. feels like doing another one of michael chew's project.. and feels like they are just carrying out the orders of the GM..

so we went to park ourself at the conference room to try and brainstorm for ideas.. we soon ran out of ideas and decided to go walk walk around the estates.. at first we tried looking into the drains for larvae.. but dun have the proper tools so cannot really see.. in the end we ended up playing at the playgrounds (got a super fun slide!) took photos together.. then lunch!!

the 3 interns at Sengkang town council
(2 more at pasir ris..)

after lunch back to conference room for rounds and rounds of games.. lol.. nothing better to do.. with no one to check or even talk to us..but eventually we decided to properly draw out our ideas to give the managers (who wasn't around for the rest of the day)

battle game on paper

haha.. dunno what kind of intern is this.. no sai kang even for us to do.. and no one to bother us at all.. (think the people in the office dun even noe we are there as interns cos we are in a completely different room from the office) if only there were filing or even photocopying to do.. we wld gladly accept the job.. (as said by the senior property officer, you can even learn something abt the company from filing.. but all say no action leh)

-yay tmr gg to watch movie with fellow interns!-

Day 5..

Day 5 is officially a slacking day.. lol

Out of eight and a half hours of work (Excluding lunch), we spent six and a half hours in a conference room slacking.. no one supervising us or giving us any work to do.. or even opening the door to speak to us.. lol dunno whether is this good or bad... (or maybe that's why our pay so low) We were only left with a stack of past training books that was written by EM services for the new officers to read.. but mostly the stuff have already been covered in the past few days training.. but nothing to do so we just copied stuff abt town council from the books to be able to fill up the report that we wld need to write after intern.

We ended up playing close to 2 hours of 'word game' ( using the last chinese word said by the previous person to form a new chinese phase and continue on and on and on..) lol first time we all play so long lar.. normally we play for a while then sian liao but we just keep going round and round.. we also spent some time finding some lizard that was running around in the room..

The two hours that was 'useful' was due to the talk we had with the senior property manager and the briefing given by the pest control task force to the cleaners.. and that briefing ended our day..

long weekend here i come..

hmm.. have i been sounding very whiny abt my internship?

Trying to embrace it..

I shall not grumble, i shall not compare.. I shall (try to) embrace it..

Tues and Wed at Town Council was much better then the 1st day.. was able to learn more stuff abt Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council and its operations.. (hee.. now we noe the history of town council and its operations by hard as every single person that give us the briefing keep repeating the same thing..) it was also much better as we had the chance to actually walk around the estate with the PM to know abt the common areas of problems, get driven around by the SPO (senior property officer) to check out the areas that have receive complaints by the residents of the area and a visit to the EM services warehouse to check out their emergency maintenance service unit (EMSU: all complaints are answered by them after office hours.. only applicable to town council under EM services..) However the rest of the time still consist of sitting in the conference room and doing nothing..

Today, we were expecting to stay in the conference room for the whole day for briefing by the finance manager.. but... the finance manager had some last min thing on and turn out we spent the whole day out of office! We went mosquito hunting!! haha.. we were soo excited as we really sick of listening to more briefing by the different officers.. :p

We were each attached to a guy from the pest company in the morning to walk around the different parts of pasir ris to learn more abt what they are doing to control the breeding of mosquitoes in the estate.. and to know which are the problematic areas to be able to come up with preventive measures for our mozzie project.. but anws... haha got attached to this friendly guy that told me a lot of info abt mozzies.. interesting!

haha.. do u know that in singapore there are different breeds of mosquitoes that are day biters which are aedes mosquitoes that only come out in the day and can spread dengue.. and there are night biters which are active at night and can spread malaria and elephantiasis.. so mosquitoes are always around 24/7.. hee.. also got to know how to differentiate between the different larvae of mosquitoes..hee.. feel free to ask me if u are interested! :)

anw.. we want around looking for mozzies and we spotted 2 different zones that were seriously breeding lots and lots of larvae due to litters blocking the drains and choked inspection chambers.. wow the inspection chambers were seriously breeding lots and lots of mozzies.. once the lid of the chamber was lifted up.. lots of fat aedes mozzies flew out.. and as expected i got bitten.. -_-'' hahaha.. the guys from the pest company was super excited.. haha.. sense of satisfaction bah.. cos it means eliminating a potential 'hot' zone before the NEA ppl.. haha.. below are photos of our 'hunting' at the inspection chamber..

Collecting of larvae sample at the choked I/C

Samples collected
(right are the aedes mozzies.. left are the night biters.. which i dunno what is their scientific name :p )

After lunch (and 2 hours of break = watching tv at coffee shop), we followed the leader to 3 different roofs of HDBs in Pasir Ris to show us the potential breeding grounds of mozzies on the roofs.. haha.. we were soooo excited.. haha.. but lots of climbing up and down, bending down and walking around.. but was worth it! the view was nice! hee.. but i think we were so desperate to relate our internship to what we learn in school that we kinda paid more attention to the different M&E stuff on the roof that we learned in PF2104... like the vent pipe, the water tanks.. where some were not adhering to the standards (hmm shall not go into details for that).. we also went into the pump rooms and switchroom to see see.. there also can breed mozzies hor..

nice view!
(sian didn't realise my phone was in the wrong mode.. now all the photos i took today is blue-ish)

Overall can say that today was enriching.. even though not relevant to what we learn in school.. the visit to so many roofs without needing to get any permission from authorities, the 'hunting' for mozzies is not something we can easily have access to.. so trying to embrace this project mozzie thingy.. trying not to complain abt the irrelevance.. (but realised that the industry ppl still dunno abt pfm.. cos the managers and officers keep thinking we are studying estate management.. still say to the pest company ppl that we are experts in the area of mosquitoes.. blah..)

p.s. for those who think that my internship would take a turn for the better and be more relevant to what we learn.. u are wrong.. the mozzie project is for the whole internship.. so pls treasure ur internship as it is more beneficial..

1st Day of Intern

What a day!! phew.. it's been a long day of travelling and waiting..

Met up with Wei Chen at the HQ near Bukit Merah at abt 8a.m. Went into the office at 8.30a.m. only to be told that i was supposed to report to Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council.. faints.. all thanks to that email that told us to report to the add in the letter which was the HQ add .. piss (i did call the HR person to clarify and was told that the place to report to would been given to our school and they wld pass it on to us.. and yet the correct info was not pass to us by SDE.. sian) So me and 4 other gals that was attached to that Town Council had to make our way there..

Walked quite a distance to Tiong Bahru MRT (and we saw a rat running around the pavement that we were walking on..eeks)and took MRT to Pasir Ris and walked to the Town Council.. reached at abt 9.40a.m. and was told that the PMs were having a meeting.. waited for 1 hour before the meeting ended.. by then we were like sian diao already..

Walked around the office and was introduced to the different ppl working there, filled in forms and was told that we would be doing a project on mosquito prevention (or they call it 'killing mozzies') diao! dunno how this is related to our course.. -_-''' anw.. we had a briefing by one of the staff there and was told we had to go to Sengkang after lunch.. haiz.. travel again

Had lunch at White Sands and then headed to Sengkang the town council to report to another PM. Was only briefed by him for abt 15 mins and then we were free! it was abt 3.30p.m. and the 5 of us were left in the meeting room to 'rot' for 2 hours! haha.. nothing to do and no one to care abt what we were doing.. so we played 10 rounds of bingo before becoming really bored.. but by then it was already 5.15p.m. and we prepared to leave at 5.30p.m... Long journey home from Sengkang.

haha.. can say not a very productive day.. just felt a lot of time wasted on travelling and waiting..
Still no idea how this internship is related to our course..
but at least the people at both Town Council are very friendly! and we can wear jeans and track shoes to work haha.. :)

Tue: reporting time 8.30a.m Pasir Ris Town Council
Wed: reporting time 8.00a.m. Sengkang
Thurs: reporting time 8.30a.m. Pasir Ris Town Council

Today i went to Velocity @ Novena Square in the late morning to study and decided to study at the KFC there... Sat down at this empty table that was in front of these 2 guys..my back facing them... as i took out my notes and pencil box.. i kinda overheard what they talking.. they were talking abt some training schedule for a marathon thingy in the next few weeks to come.. and the more i hear, the more i realised that the voice of the person directly behind me was very very very familiar.. tried turning my body to see who was behind me.. but couldn't... only could see who he was talking too... tried looking into the plastic wall thingy to see the reflection.. but only can see outline of the person..

So i gave up figuring out who he was and just plug in my earphone and starting studying.. but i still can hear the person's voice... SUPER FAMILIAR!! then like abt half and hour later.. the 2 person behind me stood up to leave KFC... and they walk past me.. and as they walk to the main corridor of the shopping centre, the guy with the familiar voice turned around and lo and behold... it was Dr Kua!! haha.. pfm ppl shld know him.. no wonder i felt the person's voice so familiar lar... Dr Kua's voice is kinda distinct.. haha just couldn't fit the voice to a face at that time... and who would have thought of one of our lecturers helping another person to plan the training regime for a marathon.. lol..

too bad i didn't realise it was him much earlier.. haha.. else i might have taken out my research methods notes and maybe freak him out.. hee.. turn around and ask him some question... haha.. (but most likely i won't do that.. lol.. maybe will just say hi..)

for a while after that.. couldn't help feeling that it was so qiao...

in the late afternoon went for my last workout for the next 2 weeks.. sian.. but i'll be back in 2 weeks time!! by then will have more time to try other classes.. can't wait.. haha..

Hectic 2 weeks ahead.. study study study study..
guess won't be blogging anything during this period cos it will just be abt studying studying studying... (unless something like what happen today occur..)

Till then.. ciao! :) jia you!

Seasons of Love

Heard this song being sung by the 8 finalists of American Idol...

Lyrics:
525,600 minutes, 525,000 moments so dear.
525,600 minutes - how do you measure, measure a year?
In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee.
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife.
In 525,600 minutes - how do you measure a year in the life?
How about love? How about love? How about love? Measure in love.
Seasons of love.

SOLOIST 1
525,600 minutes! 525,000 journeys to plan.
525,600 minutes - how can you measure the life of a woman or man?

SOLOIST 2
In truths that she learned, or in times that he cried.
In bridges he burned, or the way that she died.

COMPANY
It's time now to sing out, tho the story never ends let's celebrate remember a year in the life of friends.
Remember the love!
Remember the love! Remember the love!
Measure in love.
Seasons of love! Seasons of love.

This song is from the Broadway musical Rent..

When i heard it, the lyrics attracted me...(the tune too :D) Even though the song and the lyrics is simple.. but it sets me pondering...

How do you measure a year in your life?
How do you measure love?
How can you measure the life of a woman or man?

"I Shouldn't be Alive"

One of my weekly shows consist of this documentary on Arts Central.. "I shouldn't be alive"
I would say that after watching this show.. i'm amazed by how ppl have the will power to survive under such harsh conditions.. for so many days... i guess you must have strong determination to survive... not an easy thing for a normal person to do..

would i be able to survive if i'm in their shoes? not an easy question to answer unless i'm really in that circumstances.. (something which i'ld never never want to be in..)

Below is a description of the show taken from Art Central Website:

Using dramatic and harrowing reconstructions of terrifying life or death scenarios, combined with first person testimony from survivors, the series demonstrates the power of the human spirit and reveals the universal qualities needed to survive in extreme circumstances. These individual stories bring to life the crucial moments, chance events and painful decisions faced by those in peril. In each episode, the survivors relive their ‘moment of truth’, when the choice they make could mean a chance to live – or certain death – for themselves or their companions. Some stories come from the world of the professional adventurer and extreme sports enthusiast, the men and women who deliberately confront danger. Others are about ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances and left fighting for their lives. The series focuses on moral dilemmas, crucial moments and chance events as each film
narrates a unique and exceptional feat of survival.

However what we can learn from this show is that nothing is impossible.. never give up when we are in any difficult circumstances.. what we are facing are easy feat as compared to those survivors... deep down we have the strength to overcome anything.. we just have to find it..

if you have the time.. do watch it on Arts Central.. every Fri 10pm-11pm...

Disclaimer: i feel that it can be quite guesome at times to watch.. but maybe it is just me.. :)

。希望。。

Whee~ Construction Technology Project done! (that was a big big headache...) Cost Tutorial Presentation done! Satisfied with our work! (except for the tainted thingy.. but neverthless.. :D)

now is M&E presentation + Report and Research Methods Report... with the latter submission date on the start of reading week.. hmm.. possible to complete it before the deadline so that can start the process of studying?? possible?? *hope so!*

yesterday went to watch Step Up 2 with hui fang.. was nice! (even though i cannot really say i like street dance.. but any dance movie is NICE!! :D ) hee.. the movie was a treat to myself for the completion of the con tech project :D thx to hui fang for the free movie!!

Today i went for another site visit! Surbana One office and a HDB site at dover :) this is like only a few weeks after my last site visit to the Circle Line at NUH.. getting use to wearing boots and helmet :p

went to Surbana office for a talk on Surbana's and SIPM's operations and job scope.. gotten to know more of being a PM.. still not sure if that area is my cup of tea.. maybe being a QS suits me more.. but nevertheless still got 2 more years to explore this field and talk to more professionals and more site visits! :D

We then went down to the site at dover (after tea break and a tour round Surbana's office and gym)

On the whole can say the site visit was enriching.. even though i thought we were supposed to be going to the Pinnacle @ Duxton... -_-

After the site visit, Hui Fang and I headed down to Vivo to catch Step Up 2.. but turn out the show at 7.20pm was FULL.. :( so decided to have our dinner at Thai Express.. and then shop around..

Ended up buying 2 pieces of clothes from F21.. diao.. haha.. didn't want to spend money de... but haha luv the things i bought! no regrets! :p

yay Step Up 2 next wed!
- a celebration for the completion of Con tech project! wahaha-

Happy birthday jie jie!! :D
(if you are reading this.. haha)

Belated Birthday Celebration with Jas & Dou

After a few days of feeling sad over my wallet, Jasmine and Dorcas surprises bought my spirit up!! even though 我被骗 a few times by them.. lol i actually believe them..

I went to meet Jas and Dou for Kbox session (kinda belated birthday celebration) after doing some stuff in school.. but during my journey to Cine.. Jas called to say that Dou was not feeling well.. and that she was going home to rest.. so ok lor.. what can i do.. just felt sad that once again our gathering was missing someone..

then i asked Jas to help me buy dinner as she say she was very full and dun feel like eating.. but then she suggested gg for kbox buffet.. and i agreed, at the same time wondering why she want to go for buffet when she is full.... (hmm.. shld have felt that something was not right here..)

finally i reached cine and went up to Kbox to find them and.....

i was greeted by birthday songs and a room full of balloons!!!! and there standing in front of me was Dou!!! -totally shocked!!- haha.. and not to forgetting the slice of cake from Bakerzin! *nice*

yar.. so if u realised.. 我被骗 le.. haha..

but it's okie :D rarely i get surprises from ppl and 骗 into believing something.. ahaha..normally i wld have sensed that ppl are up to something!! good one Jas and Dou! hee..
So it was photo-taking, eating the delicious cake, attacking the buffet counter (the food is actually like those in Sakura buffet!), singing songs!

Dou, Me and Jas

Very soon it was time to go home as the kbox ppl were chasing us to leave the room... haha.. we had to burst all the balloons Jas and Dou had blown up.. but the balloon was super hard to burst lar.. and all of us were kinda scared of bursting it.. lol.. spent quite a while to burst just 5 balloons.. and there were many many more!! then i decided to just cut the balloon at the knot there and let the air out.. and it prove to be a much much quicker and safer way of bursting balloon! :D -very effective mtd!-

As we left kbox and was walking to the MRT... Jas let out something abt the present they have given me.. something abt gg back to see if anything was missing.. didn't understand... (she also mentioned that she got hint to me the day before.. but no recollection leh.. )

BUT.. when i reached home and took the present out from the box and shaked it... i was over the moon!!! JIGSAW PUZZLE!!! and when i open the wrapper... A GLOBE JIGSAW PUZZLE!!! woohooo!!!! so happy!!!!

i have always wanted a globe jigsaw but felt the pinch abt buying one.. so i made myself a promise on my 20th birthday to get myself one on my 21st if by then no one bought any for me... and now i have one!!! woohooo!! can't wait to get started on it!! but guess would have to wait till holidays then can open and do it.. -can't wait!!-
Thanks a lot Jas and Dou!!!! Thanks for the night out too! :D

And to end off... in the end something had to happen again....

yes... if u guess correctly.. something got lost again.. Dou's phone.. haiz.. we have a feeling that it might be stolen when we were in the lift.. or either it was left in the room and someone took it in the time span of around 5 mins... haiz... 2 lost cases in less than a wk..
-more pictures tmr! blogger not letting me post photos.. -

memoriable indeed...........

6th March --> Memoriable INDEED!
Haiz.. something must just happen on the last hour of 6th March to spoil my special day.. it has been so long since i had such fun on my birthday..

and i had to lose my wallet -_-
worse is that i only realised it today in the morning before gg to school.. :(

there's no address in my wallet.. hope the person who has it would be kind enough to look at my namecards and call me or email me... (but so far no news.. so i guess this is out...)
or return it to sde or bank or anywhere...

Pls come back to me!!!

Had 8 course dinner at Tung Lok Signatures @ Vivo with family, godmas and godpa... delicious food! thanks to jie fu!
(wld have really enjoyed myself if not for the wallet..)

Got shou bao for my mum, my sis and me as our birthdays are abt 1 wk apart from each other..
pretty pretty..

At least got good food to console myself :)

6th March 2008 :D

Today started out as a normal day.. gg to school for lecture and tutorial..
But.. happiness came after that!

Met Jocelyn for dinner and movie!
Good Company, Good Food, Good Movie! What more can i ask for for my birthday!! :D

We went Bakerzin for early dinner after walking around Vivo City... and i really really ate a lot!! haha.. had assam prawns with linguini (spicy) and a slice of Jocelyn's ham, bacon & mushroom flaky pizza (this is GOOD!!), together with Iced Latte :) yum!
Food was superb!

Then was the surprise birthday cake! :D haha.. didn't expect it when desert was served!
Pretty pretty and yummy yummy! Was 7 levels of chocolate ! :D

[hee.. think i'm in love with Bakerzin!]

After that, we went to watch Juno! Not bad a movie! and btw.. we bought popcorns and drinks to munch! :p

It was around 9 when the movie ended and we went to buy supper for both of our parents [meaning more food for me to eat!! wahaha..] Bought nian gao and korean XXL chicken.. Delicious!!

Thanks Jocelyn for the treat! and celebrating my birthday with me! Really appreciate it!

21st Birthday Celebration!

Venue: De Coder’s Cafe
Date: 1st March 2008, Saturday
Time: 6pm - 11pm

21st Birthday Celebration!: Pre-Party

First up was to choose the location for the party. Intially wanted to hold it at Awon Korean Restaurant... but after gg there to eat, realised that they have increased their prices.. so overbudget.. :(

And De Coder's Cafe was decided as the venue for my party within 1 hour after i came back from dinner at Awon.. haha.. would u believe it if i told u that i've decided on this place based on what i've read on the webbie (forums and their webpage: http://www.decoderscafe.com/index.htm and have never been to this place before.. haha.. dunno how the food would be like.. dunno how big is the place.. :p [but the risk paid off! :)]

After giving them a call to make reservations, i went down to the place on 21st Feb to take a look at the place (for the 1st time!) haha.. was scared i wld get lost making my way there.. :p

At the cafe, i discussed the program and packages with them, took the following pictures of the place:

And the venue is settled!! :D

My sis kindly offered to do my invitations for me :D yippee! xie xie! had to do 2 different versions - one with Joyce and another with Seo Hoon.. (cos my friends outside uni knows me by Seo Hoon)

But in the end i think i send out the 'Seo Hoon' one to most of the invitees.. hee :p So those who have the 'Joyce' one are special! :D

Next up is the decorations!!

Together with Joel, Hui Fang, Tsz Ching, we went down to Concourse to do decorations shopping on 26th Feb!! :D
Bought balloons, banners, candles, and small rubik cubes.. too bad didn't take any pictures of us looking at stuff as i wasn't planning to create a blog then :x
However, special thanks to Joel, Hui Fang and Tsz Ching for accompanying me and helping me make decisions! Without u guys, i really dunno what to buy.. THANKS!!

Decorations shopping did not end there!
27th Feb i went down to Bras Basah to do shopping for ribbons, masking tapes, glue etc.. and get some ideas on my present to the helpers :) then walked to PS from Bras Basah to continue buying stuff from Carrefour and Daiso for helpers' gift! (look below for the little gift i made for them! :D)

28th Feb i made another trip to Concourse to exchange one of the banner and bought somemore decorations: streamers!

No pictures of my shopping trips but below is all the things i had purchased over the 3 days:

Over the next 2 days was the making of the helpers' gift! Made for them heart shape candles :D

And here's the gift for the invitees and helpers..

-End of preparation for party :o) -

21st Birthday Celebration!: Decorations!

1st of March! yippee!

Morning was spent making more candles as i was afraid i did not have enough rubik cube to give out to those who came. Then i ate lunch and at around 2.30p.m. i started getting ready.. dress nice nice :D

Around 3.20p.m i was ready to set off to decorate the cafe! but had to wait for Joel and Xiao Qian's call so that can pick them up at the bus stop near my hse.. hee.. Then my dad drove us to pick up my cake at Bukit Merah Central [Sweet Ring cake shop] and next stop: the cafe!

The three of us were the first to reach there and other then the staff in the cafe, there was no one else! We had the whole place to ourself and decoration time!!

All thanks to Joel, he 'coordinated' the placement of the different decorations.. hanging the banner, streamers, balloons...

Without his help, i dunno how the place would look like.. :D

Meanwhile Xiao Qian started blowing the balloons..

Then came Hui Fang (who also helped out in the blowing of balloons) and Cheryl (who helped out with the hanging of banners and balloons)

Around 5 plus, Ernest, Valerie, Tsz Ching and her bf arrived.. and there were more ppl to blow balloons! and soon Xiao Qian was surrounded by pretty pretty balloons! Everyone was throwing the balloons they had blown at the little corner of the cafe she was sitting at! haha..

Some photos of those who came to help.. too bad i didn't take any photos of Cheryl, Tsz Ching or her bf..

After 2 hours, the cafe was ready for the party!

The decorated De Coder's Cafe (pretty pretty!)

Special thanks to Xiao Qian, Joel, Hui Fang, Valerie, Tsz Ching & bf, Ernest! hee.. to those blowing the balloons.. xin ku le!.. cos ur manually blowed up a total of 99 balloons :D

21st Birthday Celebration!: Commencement of Party!

After decorating the place, the helpers started playing the games at the cafe and soon the first guest arrived! Charmaine! hee.. too bad no early bird prize :D Shortly after that, Shaza also arrived..

Followed by the rest of the guests...

Then it was the ordering of food and playing of games!

Time FLEW past.. and its 9pm! Cake cutting time :D

But.... first is photo time! haha.. for SDE, this means a super long photo taking session with the different gps of ppl.. hee.. but its fun! :D

After all the cakes were given out, it was already close to 10 and many were planning on leaving the place already.. so i gave out my gift *rubik cube* to them.. and those remaining decided to play POLAR BEAR!! - the advanced version.. haha.. got witch, little gal, hunter, wolves, villagers, and fortune teller...

Halfway through the game, Xue Mei, my sis and jie fu reached the cafe! Before 11pm! yippee!

So happy and touched to see Xue Mei.. ahaha she managed to rush down from work.. thks for coming!! even though you could only stay for less then half an hour..

Thank you jie jie and ernest kor for coming to give me my present and driving me home :D

As the clock strikes 11pm, that signifies the ending of my party.. and it was time to burst all the balloons and take down the pretty decorations.. :(
